Family Sponsorship

Canada’s Family Sponsorship program allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their family members to come to Canada as permanent residents. This program aims to reunite families by allowing them to live, work, and study in Canada. Here’s an overview of the Family Sponsorship program, specifically tailored for clients of Iranica Immigration.

Who Can Be Sponsored?

  1. Spouse, Common-Law Partner, or Conjugal Partner

    • You can sponsor your spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner to become a permanent resident of Canada. Your relationship must be genuine and legally recognized.
  2. Dependent Children

    • You can sponsor your dependent children, including adopted children, to come to Canada. Dependent children must be under 22 years old and not have a spouse or partner. Children over 22 may qualify if they are unable to financially support themselves due to a physical or mental condition.
  3. Parents and Grandparents

    • You can sponsor your parents and grandparents to come to Canada. The Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship Program (PGP) allows you to bring your parents and grandparents to Canada as permanent residents.
  4. Other Relatives

    • In certain circumstances, you can sponsor other relatives, such as orphaned brothers, sisters, nephews, nieces, or grandchildren who are under 18 years old and not married or in a common-law relationship. You may also sponsor one relative of any age if you do not have any other eligible relatives to sponsor in Canada or abroad.

Eligibility Requirements for Sponsors

  • Status: You must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
  • Age: You must be at least 18 years old.
  • Financial Ability: You must demonstrate that you have enough income to support your family members once they arrive in Canada. This includes providing proof of income and meeting the minimum necessary income requirements for certain sponsorships, such as parents and grandparents.
  • Commitment: You must agree to financially support your sponsored family member(s) for a specific period. This commitment is known as an “undertaking.”

Application Process

  1. Determine Eligibility

    • Ensure you meet the eligibility requirements for sponsorship.
    • Ensure the family members you wish to sponsor meet the eligibility criteria.
  2. Gather Required Documents

    • Proof of relationship with the sponsored family member(s) (e.g., marriage certificate, birth certificate)
    • Financial documents to demonstrate your ability to support the sponsored family member(s)
    • Police clearance certificates and medical exams for the sponsored family member(s)
  3. Submit Sponsorship Application

    • Complete the sponsorship application forms and gather all required documents.
    • Pay the application fee and submit your application to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
  4. Application Processing

    • IRCC will review your application and may request additional information or documents.
    • Processing times vary depending on the type of sponsorship and the country of residence of the sponsored family member(s).
  5. Decision and Arrival

    • If your application is approved, your family member(s) will receive a Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) and a visa (if applicable).
    • Your family member(s) can then travel to Canada and become permanent residents upon arrival.
